also much more devs will join after the source code will be reeased...

if the source code wont be released that means this will be a greed coin which wont succeed..

There are other models to consider:

I'm not too worried about the kids yelling scam in the forums and btc-e. I care about figuring out a model that balances the different approaches against risk. There are other models and approaches, such as shared source which provide the benefits of evaluating the software without necessarily providing an easy mechanism for 50+ clones.

I don't think it's fair to say if x doesn't happen it's a 'greed' coin.

I'm in favored of a delayed release of the colored coin app for 3 months or so......how about you launch it on 4-20? ;).

The source HAS to be released but I understand that clones will be a very serious issue if you release it at the wrong moment in time. All of us Early adopters to next......I'm confident we can hold the line regardless of criticism.

This is a hard one, I like the idea of keeping the kernel closed and releasing API for building applications on Nxt Client.  But full release of source is also a good idea.

I would be happy to see a source release early in the new year, once we have a majority of people able to use the software and its basic functionality without it breaking(broken software is never good advertising, even if it's open source).

I don't expect clones to come out of the woodwork immediately regardless of market cap, because the Bitcoin clones are based on being familiar, disposable, and easy to market to the unwitting. With a completely different codebase and some new concepts that go against the grain, Nxt won't be a prime target for cloning until it's in very safe territory.

such a plan:
1. Only base version of Nxt code is published on the 3rd of Jan (without Colored Coins, Messaging, etc.)
2. Extended version published when Nxt becomes more popular (in 3-6 months)
- agree.

Just keep in mind that there are already discussions about Nxt @ eMunie, Bitshares, Mastercoin forums.
They want to see the code and they realize it is not open source yet.

That said, I am not quite sure of what would be best to do - I tend to agree with those saying to open source the basic kernel of the code and keep close the key features..

I agree with this. The true value of Nxt lies in its features .. anything that doesn't threaten those important features can be open sourced IMO.

The greatest advantage of NXT is that it's the first on the market. The client is still quite unstable, hard to use for novice computer users and the features are a small subset of eMunie for example. Success can only be achieved if a critical mass is adopted soon. Without releasing the source code of the core in the beginning of January this critical mass will not be reached.

I agree with open-sourcing non-critical base code, but keep the colored coin and decentralized exchange closed for now.

Core money transmission stuff should be open sourced. This is one of the major foundations of confidence.

The "special sauce" like the exchange, colored coins, etc. could stay closed source for a while until some publicly stated adoption goal is reached.

I'm in agreement on this. Open the core, let the cloners release their crappy wannabes without the juicy features until nxt get its strong footing a la networking effect and first mover status. This will help mitigate the "clone coin" deluge that we've seen with bitcoin. If they want to release a good crypto, force them to innovate. Otherwise they don't deserve it.
