"Showcasing Nxt clients" article series on nxtcoins.nl
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:32:58 AM »
Hi people,

Just want to give the heads up on an upcoming feature on my site.  :)

I'm going to showcase as many clients as I can.
I've contacted most developers and they have all agreed to have their clients showcased :)

IF I missed anyone of you, this is not because I don't want you, it's because so much is happening that I just missed you.

Please PM me, and you will also be included. I'll PM you back with the things I would like.

Here is the link to the announcement of the feature: http://www.nxtcoins.nl/showcasing-nxt-clients/

That's a sweet idea!
It maybe a lot to ask but I thought I'll just put'd be awesome if the clients source could also be reviewed by the time you showcase them. I think once people see what kind of great looking clients are out there they are going to use them. I don't want to accuse anyone but I don't think we should trust any client that hasn't been reviewed by someone who knows his stuff.

If clients are open source, I will surely link to the code.

Some clients are still closed source, but will be open in the future. In that case, I will also mention that.

I will not give recommendations, as each reader will have to decide for themselves.

I myself am personally not bothered by some closed source clients, especially if I trust the developer, but some people find it very important.

That's totally OK.

The idea is to get all relevant info out there, so people know there are alternatives to the NRS client.

Thanks for the heads up Damelon  :)

I appreciate you won't be making recommendations regarding the different clients but it would be very useful for the mainstream users like me to have some simple way of making meaningful comparisons between the different clients - perhaps in terms of their respective key features/benefits. Would that be possible?

I will set it up in a way that makes comparison easy, so a few things to compare them on.
The whole idea is to make it easy for mainstream (well, relatively mainstream, because let's face it, if you were truly mainstream you'd not even be here ;)) users to pick and choose whichever you like.

The posts will have screenshots of course, and a featurelist and I will testdrive the clients myself so I can see what they do and how they work.

I want more people to use them, so any pointers about what you want to hear about will be useful.

That is totally up to you.
I will point out that his client is currently closed source.

However, he has invested $1400,- and is currently moving to an open source model. (no ETA)

As I said, I'm just going to state the facts and leave it at that.

All opinions will be up to the users themselves. Some won't have a problem with it, some will.  :)

Thanks Damelon

OK maybe not quite mainstream but definitely non-techie, unfortunately :-\

The only pointers I can think of are the obvious ones: ease of installation; ease of use; smooth running (i.e. bug free) and support.

Beyond that, to paraphrase a certain US politician, I'm in the realm of:

the unknown unknowns – there are things I do not know I don't know.

Another thought: Other than keeping up to date with the forum posts will there be any way of knowing which of the clients is becoming (has become) the most popular?

At this point the answer to that would be: "no idea yet" ;)

I guess the best way to keep track of it would be to ask the developers for download figures. I don't know if it's possible to see who is using what client via for instance analysis software like Google Analytics does with browser usage.

It would be good to know for developers in the future. My first instinct would be to make regular polls about it.
