How can I confirm transactions?

I'm new to all of these things

It seems a few people have sent me a nxt coin and it showed up in the Unconfirmed transaction window, but I didn't knew how to accept it and they vanished somehow. I would like to start mining, but without a coin I ain't gonna have much fun with it 

May I ask if someone send me a coin?

I am willing to use the exchange to buy some NXT, but I'm still not certain my client is even working.  When I buy, what will it look like on my client?  Can a kind soul gift me a coin to start?  I'm willing to dance for it.
