Tough one. Hold on to too much (and if everyone else does the same) and the coin will never get off the ground. 1 Bil coins and only a couple hundred users with the vast majority of coins in the pockets of tens of users? It can't succeed.
Hold on to too little and you will kick yourself later if they are worth more.
So, I would say pick an amount of money as a nice to have medium term, say $10,000.
Say NXT one day 3-5 years are on parity with BTC at say $10,000 a coin. There are 1 bil NXT and only approx 17 mil BTC. So 0.017 NXT per BTC and a value of $170 per NXT.
If you want say $10,000 then you will need approx 60 coins. Say 100k, 600 coins etc.
Estimate your own numbers and see what you come up with. Where do you think the coin will be in a few years? Will it be surpassed by something better?
Personally, my view is that NXT is Bitcoin 1.1 and that Bitcoin 2.0 will be made by a bigger corporation. It will probably gain a little traction until something better comes along. This all feels very alpha to me and feels like it has a long way to go to be mainstream. The first big company that puts big money behind developing their own secure, fair and easy to understand/use coin will hit the big time. It will make these coins by small single developers look amateur. I think the main stumbling block will basically be that the more coins you have, the more coins you make. It's not going to go down very well with the public and media. The reason bitcoin took off was because anyone could mine it and anyone could have a go. It will always be much harder with NXT.
I thought Ripple might have done it at one point, but that's too complex for the mainstream and it's not getting favourable reviews from the BTC community.
It will be a lightbulb moment I think when something comes along that's just right, and everyone will know it's the way forward.
All that being said, and as with all things, I could be wrong. NXT could get some serious development interest and really take off. I hope it does. I think the whole idea of crypto currency is a good thing and will help take some of the power away from the banks and big corporations that rule this world.
